Wongai Guinea!

Wongai Guinea! Drum and Dance presents music and dance from West Africa.

The group is Maria Young, drummer/lead dancer, Gabriel Bata, dancer/lead djembe and TimRenner dunun accompaniment. We perform music and dance from the Mande people descended from the ancient kingdom of Mali. Each rhythm is used for a specific occasion in community life, all of which are celebrations.

Maria Young was captivated by the the richness of Guinea music and dance in 1994. Since then she has dedicated her life to studying, teaching and performing. She has shared with
communities in California, Oregon, Colorado, St. Croix and Puerto Rico and feels greatly

honored to do so. Through her involvement with this culture she feels she contributes to the joy and healing most needed in the world today. Maria has taught dance at Sonoma State, performed drums with group opening for Femi Kuti, choreographed 8 dancers for Health and Harmony Festival and created and ran a West African music and dance camp called Camp Mandeng.

Gabriel Bata is a percussionist/dancer from Cameroon specializing in traditional performing art forms from West/Central Africa and the Caribbean.  Gabriel Bata has taught and performed percussion/dance extensively while living in the bay area.   His performance credits include The Black Choreographer’s Festival, The San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, Cuba Caribe, Movement Evolution(Houston,TX), Fithye music Festival(Turkey).  Gabriel Bata is currently a
Social Sciences teacher utilizing his cultural knowledge of African performing arts to enrich the lives of his students.

Tim Renner is a bassist and drummer from Oregon. He was first exposed to West African drum and dance by the Ghanaian community in Portland. He began to learn Mandinka music in 2017, practicing in drum and dance classes with Maria Young. He feels grateful to collaborate with the Wongai Guinea! troupe.
